| The "Beyond Self-Esteem" Experience from St. Louis Psychic Cynthia Becker |
From
St. Louis Magazine, July 2007:
"The world’s first psychic detective squad was founded by a St. Louis housewife in 1971. When the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
and the Globe-Democrat ran their coverage of a murder on September 7, 1971, both papers
devoted substantial column inches to Bevy Jaegers and her students. “Psychic
had remarkable impressions on the location of Mrs. Lucas’ body,” read the Globe’s headline. Eventually, the story would be featured as a reenactment on Leonard Nimoy’s
In Search Of … . Jaegers began receiving calls asking for help on other unsolved murder cases—and so the U.S. Psychic Rescue Squad, the world’s first
psychic detective unit, was born. Though Jaegers died in December 2001, the squad is still in operation today. Its work has
been covered by the Discovery Channel, Omni and A&E’s The Unexplained. Its members are
now scattered from California to England, though a good number are still in St. Louis. There has been talk of doing a Psi Squad reality show, but the St. Louis members, most of them in law enforcement, must
keep their work a secret; if anyone knew, they fear they would lose their jobs, even though all work is pro bono and provided
as a public service.
“There’s no one here in St. Louis who wants to be on TV,” says Russ Hartford*,
a squad member and former detective who’s been with the group since the beginning. “Here, you’re not very
well-accepted if you go into that ... The more religious they are, the more freaked out people get. They don’t see that
it’s a scientific thing—they think you’re in league with the devil.”
Throughout the
’70s and ’80s, Jaegers was famous for her predictions. Yet she was the unlikeliest of psychics. A little
over 5 feet tall and heavyset, Jaegers wisecracked, chain-smoked and refused to tolerate the ridiculous, even in her own hair.
She dyed hers blue-black to hide its natural coppery red color, which she thought looked absurd with her olive complexion
and black eyes. She grew up in St. Louis Hills, the daughter of a cop (her grandfather, brother and uncles
were all cops, too), and inherited her dad’s hard-boiled skepticism. “As far as I know, I’d never heard
the word ‘psychic’ in my life,” she said of her upbringing.
What really set Jaegers apart, though, was her belief that ESP is a skill that can be taught, not a mysterious power granted to a handful of people born with the thumbprint of God on their foreheads. Jaegers—who,
for the record, wasn’t overly fond of the word “psychic”—thought of herself as a mind researcher,
not a mystic. When she taught her classes, there was no incense, no chanting, no visualization of chakras. There were only
sealed envelopes and closed boxes, passed around the room. Each student would hold the object in his or her left hand, connected
to the highly intuitive right brain (though southpaws are often the opposite), and write down what rose to mind. Jaegers’
theory was that all objects absorb information from their surroundings that can
then be accessed through the use of the subconscious."

St. Louis Psychic History Trivia #1: St. Louis
Psychic Bevy Jaegers was one of the first people to research out and report on psychic research being done behind the iron curtain. The early 1960s was a time when it was not easy to find
this information, but this St. Louis Psychic dug up every piece
of literature she could get her hands on and every thing available through scientific and professional journals from the Soviet
Union. And St. Louis Psychic Bevy Jaegers began teaching her own psychic development classes right here in St. Louis, and in over 25 other cities around the country.

St. Louis Psychic History Trivia #2: In 1979, Washington
University in St. Louis received a half million dollars to do psychic research in St. Louis. The St. Louis McDonnell Laboratory for Psychic Research was founded
and headed by Dr. Peter R. Phillips, Professor of Physics and Professor Mark Shafer. For several years professors Phillips
and Shafer attempted to scientifically verify the psychic abilities of two
young men who had come to their lab here in St. Louis. These
two young men seemed to demonstrate numerous psychic abilities in exploratory studies with the professors. However when Phillips and Shafer studied the psychic abilities these two
young men under more controlled testing they were never able to demonstrate the same psychic abilities. It was later discovered that these young men were secretly
planted in this study by a man named, James Randi, in a deliberate effort to discredit Phillips and Shafer and any legitimate
attempt to study psychic phenomena. Copyright ©2007 by Bill Weber & Cynthia Becker
St. Louis Psychic History Trivia
#3: In the early 1980s, "Common Grounds" & Doug Zeigler, produced
the first metaphysical newsletter for the St. Louis area psychic community. This groundbreaking psychic newsletter was both spiritual
and informational featuring St. Louis area psychics and upcoming psychic events in the St. Louis Area. Common Ground’s
publication was eventually taken over by Michael Mathews who changed the name to "Inner Worlds" for 7 or 8 more years.
When Inner Worlds stopped printing, Vito Ponticello stepped in to fill the gap with a new publication he called
"Illimunations". Vito was able to build the success of Illuminations until he turned this small psychic
publication into the very successful and widely read newspaper known today as “The
Pathfinder”. Copyright ©2007 by Bill Weber

St. Louis Psychic
History Trivia #4: During the 1980s,
prominent St. Louis Psychic, Faith Ann Robinson and her partner, Anne Caltado, were
responsible for organizing the success of some of largest Psychic Fairs in
the history of St. Louis. Attended by over 1000 people a day, these fairs included lectures, demonstrations,
psychic readings, music, books, crystals, meditations, healings, and more. After
organizing 3 or 4 fairs together Anne moved out of town and Faith continued to run the fairs on her own. Psychic Fairs in St Louis were so successful that everyone wanted to jump onto the bandwagon. Soon there were competing psychic fairs offered
every month in St. Louis. This competition soon spread the market too thin for anyone to succeed and these large exciting
Psychic Fairs quickly became a thing of the past for St. Louis. Copyright ©2007 by Bill Weber & Cynthia Becker
St. Louis Psychic History Trivia #5: In 1971, a St. Louis Psychic,
Bevy Jeagers, started the very first Psychic detective squad in history. That’s right! This St. Louis psychic gained national attention providing police with invaluable information about an unsolved murder.
Both the St. Louis Post Dispatch and the St. Louis Globe Democrat ran featured articles acclaiming psychic reader Bevy Jeagers. Headline in the St. Louis Globe Democrat read: “Psychic had remarkable impressions on the location of Mrs. Lucas’ body.” Bevy Jaegers Psychic died 2001. Copyright ©2007

St. Louis Psychic History Trivia #6: Bevy Jaegers,
a St. Louis Psychic Reader, was the first to
teach classes on psychic abilities in a public school as far back as the 1960s. She also founded US Psi Squad, the
first psychic
detective squad in the country
here in St. Louis. This psychic squad was formed in order to help locate missing persons. This group of psychics was so successful that they gained
national attention for their work. Psychic Bevy Jaegers went on to establish and train over 25 more groups of psychic readers
to do the same type of work in other cities across the country and had her own nationally syndicated radio program.
